What's the Big Deal with EQ?

Some people ignore EQ, some people overuse it.  EQ may be the most useful tool in your signal processing tool belt.  Just because some people overuse it should not deter you from mastering it.  A little subtle EQ can do wonders in your mix.

As I explain in the fist lesson of my EQ Masterclass, EQ as being like color correction in image editing.  If you took a picture of a mountain landscape with green trees and azure blue skies, it's easy to jump into a photo editing application and make the sky bluer or the trees a deeper shade of green.  At its core you are boosting or attenuating a certain band of colors across the visual spectrum.  Same thing with EQ.

What's the most basic EQ?

If you've ever uses the tone controls on a guitar amp or car stereo, you've used EQ.  Simple Bass and Treble controls are a way to emphasize or diminish your low end or high end respectively.  Technically they are called "shelving" EQs because they tweak all the frequencies from say 100Hz and down or 10KHz and up.  Think of them as bookends on a "shelf".  Bump up the treble and you are boosting all the frequencies from 10KHz and up.

Why do we use EQ?

Simply to accentuate or attenuate parts of the frequency spectrum that we either want to highlight or hide.  There are high frequencies on vocals around 10 to 15KHz that shimmer and add some shine when accentuated in a mix.  There are also nasally artifacts around 1K that if scooped out can improve a vocal.  EQ is simply locating the bands of frequencies that either help or detract from a particular sound source.  Your job is to identify that band and boost or cut it...wide or narrowly.

FREE EQ Chart & Cheat Sheet and Video Course.

Because this is such a crucial fundamental in audio, I've put together an EQ Chart & Cheat Sheet that lists all the important frequencies that you need to be familiar with.  If you need to quickly know how to pull up EQ settings to make a kick drum pop or achieve a killer vocal.  This is the resource you need.  It's perfect for laminating or framing and displaying for constant reference in your home or project studio or at your live mixing console.

Apart from all the tweaks that I've used working with some of the biggest names in the industry on, I have also thrown in a series of videos that will have you mastering EQ in no time.  You're literally 60 seconds away from downloading your own chart and viewing your first video.
